SmX - Automated Masking Screens
The PROMASK QUAD is the supreme 4-way projection screen masking system by SmX.
The PROMASK-QUAD is a native 16:9 (1.78:1) viewable projection screen that masks your viewable screen down to every possible aspect ratio without being confined to a projected constant image height or constant image width.
Each masking panel in the PROMASK-QUAD is independently controlled. This allows the end user endless flexibility in masking. With the PROMASK-QUAD, you can mask for off centered projected images (horizontally and vertically) with simple ease. You can also independently drop the bottom mask to view subtitles and menus while maintaining the other masks in their position.
All Pro-Mask systems accommodate our front and rear, solid and acoustically transparent projection screen surfaces and are available with our acoustic and non-acoustic masking panels.
Why mask the projected image?
Because the dark black frame and mask around your viewable screen perceives increased contrast and makes the projected image appear to float off the screen. The masks also give you a sharp black border around your projected image. So the blacker the frame/mask material the higher perceived contrast
The purpose of a masking system:
HD video projectors project a native 16:9 (1.78:1) image. The idea screen to start with would be the same aspect ratio as the projector which would be 16:9.
So lets say you have a 16:9 aspect ratio HD projector and a 16:9 aspect ratio projection screen. Most HDTV broadcasts will fill your 16:9 screen so you will be fine if you are only going to watch those few channels or few movies that will fill your screen.
However, if you plan on watching any major released movies they are most likely going to be in a 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 aspect ratio. This means the projected image is now wider than your conventional 16:9 projection screen. You are now going to have black or dark grey projected bars above and below your projected image due to sizing the 2.35:1 AR projected image inside a 16:9 AR screen.
Now lets say you want to watch standard definition television or DVD's that are in the 4:3 (1.33:1) aspect ratio. Now your 4:3 projected image is not as wide as your conventional 16:9 aspect ratio screen and you are now going to have black or grey bars on the sides of your projected Image.
Screen Material
All of our fixed frame and masking systems come complete with any one of our fine front projection screen surfaces, including our proprietary patent pending CineWeave™ HD White or Grey audio transparent screen surface, the CineMatte Plus solid screen surface, or any of our rear projection screen surfaces.
The combination of any of these screen surfaces matched with any of our projection screen systems provides the highest quality projection screen available on the market.
All Projection Screens are Not Created Equal
CineWeave™ HD A screen surface so good that Hollywood post production studios use it to produce the very same movies you will ultimately be watching on it.
One of the integral parts of SmX is the SmX CineWeave™ HD, an audio transparent projection screen surface that will not only provide one of the most incredible projected images you will ever see, but will also allow audio to pass through the projection screen surface with out distortion.
Pure Color Accuracy
The CineWeave projection screen surface starts with pure color accuracy. The specially formulated white color of the CineWeave achieves dead neutral accurate color reproduction.
Other video projection screens can color shift, making projected images appear to push blue, green, or red. This push of color creates an unnatural balance to your projected image. The CineWeave™ HD is completely neutral in color reproduction, thereby providing complete balanced color uniformity for truly natural vibrant color.
The Highest Gain Weaved Screen (1.16 Gain)
The CineWeave™ HD is currently the highest gain weaved audio transparent projection screen surface on the market. The gain of the SmX CineWeave™ HD gives your projected image a back lit look.
That is, the projected image will not look as if it is just being projected on a screen material such as that of other weaved screens with a negative gain. Other matte white woven audio transparent screens on the market have negative gains as low as -.83
Increased Contrast
Another special feature of the White CineWeave™ HD projection screen material is its ability to increase the contrast of your projected image. A Grey projection screen is usually necessary to increase contrast, but a Grey screen sacrifices gain (brightness).
The White CineWeave™ HD weave was formulated to increase contrast by using the voids throughout the acoustically transparent screen. These voids in the CineWeave™ HD produce just enough black without sacrificing gain or resolution. You cannot achieve increased contrast such as this from a solid white projection screen; the increase of contrast is just one of the features that makes the CineWeave™ HD special.
Increased Sharpness
The SmX CineWeave™ HD helps increase the sharpness of your
projected image. This works especially well for projectors with a softer projected image such as D-ILA, LCOS and CRT technology. The perceived sharpness of the SmX CineWeave™ HD even makes HD projected images look more defined with DLP and LCD technology.
It has been said that the CineWeave™ HD provides a sharper picture than some solid screens currently on the market today.
Just to give you an idea, a micro-perforated screen had the world's smallest perforated hole in a movie screen. So how does the SmX CineWeave™ HD perforation size compare to that of a perforated or micro-perforated screen?Actual size side-by-side comparisons are shown below:
No noticeable perferations with SmX

Perforated SmX CineWeave Micro Perforated
Perforations in a micro-perf screen is about .02" ; this is extremely small but still noticeable by many people viewing from standard seating distances. The perforation in the SmX CineWeave™ HD is about 3.5 times smaller than a Microperf. In fact, for every 65 holes on a Microperf projection screen, the SMX has 182 perforations/sound holes
